[00:00:00] Jess: Welcome to the Yap Corner, A podcast for dog parents by dog parents.
[00:00:10] Madison: We're your hosts, Madison Bennett and Jess Berg. Two dog obsessed humans who know that life is just better with a pup. I'm Madison and my favorite podcast is No such thing as a Fish. Aside from this one of course, and my favorite go-to late night snack is Justin's dark chocolate peanut butter cups.
[00:00:29] Jess: And I'm Jess, always down for a DIY project and currently gearing up for a California coastal road trip. This isn't your typical podcast. We're not here to talk training manuals or food debates, just real talk about the everyday chaos and joy of life with dogs. So grab your pup, your beverage of choice, and let's yap about it all.
[00:00:48] We're jumping into pup dates, we'll bring those back. Talk a little bit about what we've been up to and our pup dates in our lives. For Ziggy and I, we are just gearing up for a fun summer, so we're doing all the things, trimming her nails, giving her a bath. Brushing her teeth, making sure all of her grooming is ready for a hot girl.
[00:01:10] Summer,
[00:01:10] Madison: Ziggy's always in our hot girl. Summer. This is true for us. We've had a very busy chaotic month, if I must say. We've been at the vet pretty much almost every week, dropping a lot of money. We've been trying to figure out what's going on with Gemini. She's had some health concerns, but sounds like everything's gonna be all right.
[00:01:30] So we're okay. But it's, it's been a very busy month
[00:01:34] Jess: and it's not just Gemini. You're getting all the updates and vaccinations and your cats and the dogs
[00:01:40] Madison: and
[00:01:41] Jess: all of them hate
[00:01:42] Madison: the vet. So it's always a stressful time, but. You know, things have to be done and the dogs and cats have to be healthy. So yeah, it's been a lot.
[00:01:50] Jess: Have you ever looked at those mobile vets or the services that come to your house?
[00:01:56] Madison: Yeah, I think it's our next go-to, actually, our agility trainer just recommended a mobile vet to us, so I'm definitely gonna take a look into that, have them come out and, and see. 'cause the dogs and and cats both get very stressed out at the vent.
[00:02:12] At the vet and I don't wanna stress him out. Of course. So,
[00:02:15] Jess: well, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience. Yeah, me
[00:02:18] Madison: too. Let's hope it's a positive one. Um, and for Apollo, actually, he just started agility training. I know I said a few episodes ago that he doesn't do it, but we decided to look into it for him to see if it would help with his confidence boosting.
[00:02:35] And we've done one class so far and it. Did some footwork class and he definitely was nervous, but the trainer was like, this is gonna be great for his confidence and. I'm getting him back out there, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how that progresses.
[00:02:49] Jess: Yeah, he's definitely got like his muscular fit bod going.
[00:02:53] Madison: Everyone always says he's so fit. Same with Gemini, actually Gemini is really muscular, so it's funny to see them both, but they're very active pups, so
[00:03:01] Jess: we like to keep him healthy. Yeah. I need to give Ziggy a little more. Yes, you're looking over at me. I need to give Ziggy some. Little more activity. We took her to her kind of just check in and they didn't say she was overweight, but they were like, oh, gained a little pound here, Zig.
[00:03:18] So it's with summer, we're always like out and about and we'll go paddle boarding and walks and adventures. So.
[00:03:26] Madison: She's not in her, uh, hibernation era
[00:03:29] Jess: in the winter. So yeah, that's why I said our hot girl summer, we're getting ready for it. Yeah,
[00:03:33] Madison: and it's crazy though 'cause the dogs do, when they gain a pound, it's like a big deal, especially at the vet.
[00:03:40] So we're very cautious about even weighing their food and all that, which I'm sure we'll talk about in a future episode. But they have to stay healthy. So
[00:03:49] Jess: doing the best we can. Great pup dates for us.
[00:03:51] Madison: Yeah,
[00:03:52] Jess: today's episode is gonna be a fun one around dog events. There's tons to talk about. I'm sure there is way more out there than what we've done our research on, but we're gonna talk about different events throughout the year, some that are on our radar, and some best practices, tips that we follow when we attend dog events.
[00:04:10] Before we do that, we're gonna introduce some new. Little fun branded phone cases that Madison made us. So TYC, the Yap corner
[00:04:19] Madison: already has some dog hair in it. Of
[00:04:20] Jess: course. Every, everything. Yes. Because this episode is gonna be heavily relied on notes and information, all things that are impossible to memorize.
[00:04:32] So this episode, we will definitely be looking at our phones, but there's a cute backing to our. Phone cases,
[00:04:39] Madison: check it out. Hopefully we'll be getting some merch one day with this logo or other logos on it, but it's a cute start.
[00:04:45] Jess: We're also wearing matching socks that we got at Booze Hounds in Palm Springs.
[00:04:51] They say bad bitches on 'em.
[00:04:52] Madison: Yeah,
[00:04:54] Jess: that's for Ziggy and Gemini. The Bad Bitches. Yes. So cute. Why don't you kick us off with the different types of dog events that we're gonna chat about today?
[00:05:02] Madison: Yeah, so there's so many different dog events and I. No. A lot of times when we Google dog events, the most popular thing that actually comes up is gonna be competition events.
[00:05:13] We're actually not going to discuss that much today 'cause in a future episode we're gonna talk about all of our things, agility, doc diving, nose work, all the different things that go out. On out there. But we really wanted this to be centered around at fun events. Not that those aren't, but more of the dog festivals, breed specific meetups, athletic events that are like little stumps racing.
[00:05:37] Um, also social events, charity walks and some pop-up and market events. So have a lot to cover. I think, you know, for us, we. A lot of times go to a lot of different events, especially in Southern California. There's always something going on. There's dog days of summer and Cardiff, there's even surfing competitions down at the beach.
[00:06:02] So again, we wanted to highlight some of those happening.
[00:06:05] Jess: And the fun part is there are new events that come and go throughout the year that are annual. There's always things happening and new ideas, new events that are popping up and. They're just fun to check out and grab your dog, grab your friends, and.
[00:06:21] Head out for a day of fun and activity.
[00:06:23] Madison: Even bring Fido, which we've mentioned before, they're a great resource for a lot of dog things. They do have a calendar on their website that they update pretty frequently, especially every month with different events happening. So sometimes we'll check that out and, and see what's happening around us, or if we're traveling to a place, see what's happening in that area.
[00:06:43] But for now, we have looked up some events that are current or reoccurring around the country. Um, so we have. Of course. World Dog Day in LA that just happened. That's put on by Lisa Vanderpump. One day we'll probably go to that, maybe sponsored with the dogs or something. It'll be interesting.
[00:07:03] Jess: It's so fun, those types of events, especially when they're like celebrity focused because they're going all out.
[00:07:10] They have like custom everything. They have fun activations, fun like food and desserts for like, they have content all over the events. So those are great. And it's cool to see all those people come together. And majority of the time these events are tied to a foundation, which I think this one is her own.
[00:07:28] Vanderpump Foundation for the dogs and they raise a ton of money. Mm-hmm. So I don't feel bad watching all this fun content when I know that a lot of good is being done.
[00:07:39] Madison: Mm-hmm. Definitely one will attend one day. I know we just missed the last one, but maybe in the future, maybe next year. Around May.
[00:07:47] There's also the PET Gala, which is a MET gala for dogs. What, in New York? Yeah. I have not seen this one. That
[00:07:53] Jess: also just happened. I know. It makes sense that it would be around the actual Met Gala. I wonder if Tika, the Iggy Ghost.
[00:08:02] Madison: With her amazing dresses. Hi. Okay.
[00:08:10] She's pissed. She wasn't invited to the MET Gala.
[00:08:13] Jess: Yeah, he wants to be at the MET Gala or the PET Gala. The PET Gala. Yeah. Sorry. I mean the Met
[00:08:18] Madison: Gala too. I'd go to both.
[00:08:28] Good girl. Yeah.
[00:08:29] Jess: Yeah.
[00:08:31] Madison: There's also bark at the park events.
[00:08:34] Jess: Those are all over. Mm-hmm. Almost. I don't know if it's every stadium, but it's almost seems like almost every stadium does it. I
[00:08:42] Madison: think more baseball stadiums, MLB stadiums are actually catching onto that and adding that, because I know. Owners love to bring their pups and what a better place in some outdoor space.
[00:08:52] We've been to bark at the park actually a few times.
[00:08:56] Jess: Yeah. We've gone with you a couple times when you have extra tickets.
[00:08:59] Madison: The at Petco Park, which of course is definitely going to be a stadium that needs to have it since it's sponsored by Petco and it's always a great time. You get to walk on the field with your dogs.
[00:09:10] Sometimes they'll even have Petco treats that they hand you at the door. The dogs love it. I mean, there's so many different dogs there. And then they also have the field right outside the stadium where you sit with your dog, so you're not like in the stands. Although some of the stadiums, I think the Dodgers, you get to sit in the stands.
[00:09:28] Jess: When we lived in Virginia, we went to bark in the park at the Washington Nationals, and they had a section in the stands for the dogs. Oh, that's cool. So it was blocked off. That was fun.
[00:09:38] Madison: So you got to sit in the stadium seats with the dogs? Mm-hmm. That's okay. 'cause Yeah, I
[00:09:42] Jess: know San Diego, you're in the grass area
[00:09:44] Madison: outside, which at San Diego they do even have a dog park attached to it, which is cute.
[00:09:51] That little um, it's brand new.
[00:09:53] Jess: Yeah. And don't they have like VIP suites for the dogs? I
[00:09:57] Madison: think so. Yeah. That's a goal. That's
[00:09:59] Jess: cool. I also saw that the Washington Wizards. I don't know if they were the first NBA team. I think they were where they did their own version of bark in the park and they brought dogs to the basketball game and they had like a suite for some of the dogs and then in the seats.
[00:10:15] So it's definitely catching on. Mm-hmm. More events. Oh, also the hockey teams. Yeah. We've seen the hockey games with the dogs and the dog groups.
[00:10:24] Madison: Mm-hmm.
[00:10:24] Jess: So a lot of sporting events that are leaning into that dog centric. Audience for their dog parents to bring 'em out to the game. Creative marketing
[00:10:34] Madison: tickets are often limited for these events, so whenever people ask me about them, I'm like, get 'em as soon as you can.
[00:10:40] There's only a couple events each year. I know even the Dodgers we wanted to go this year, they're already sold out as far as we know. So definitely check early. The dogs are just moving
[00:10:52] Jess: and moving and grooving in the studio today. They are antsy. We've got Ziggy and Apollo in the studio today.
[00:10:57] Madison: Yeah, Ziggy's sitting next to me on the couch and Apollo keeps jumping up and down.
[00:11:02] I think he wants to play ball.
[00:11:03] Jess: We've also been to Apollo Olympics, and that's put on by Positive management. That event was a lot of fun. That was at the Coliseum. We brought the dogs in the wagon. Mm-hmm. Because it was a hot summer day. The wagon was a great, we picked that up on our way. Great choice.
[00:11:19] Madison: That was probably the best purchase we've made in a long time.
[00:11:22] I don't know how we've gone this far without a wagon. No. Honestly, for the dogs. The dogs were perfect. All three of them.
[00:11:27] Jess: And we just pulled 'em around, pulled them
[00:11:29] Madison: around. They hopped out a few times when it wasn't so hot or when there's shade. But there was a lot of vendors activities and it was honestly really cool just seeing the.
[00:11:38] The Coliseum, and that's where the Olympics has been hosted before, and I think this year they're doing the Olympics. Is that this year? No, I'm so lost. 2024. Nope. 2028. Yeah. Okay. I was gonna say, just happened. So in 2028, they're doing some of the events there again. So I wonder if Paul Olympics will have a Paul Olympics around the Olympics.
[00:11:58] That would be smart. I've had friends go to puppy yoga and brunches, where a lot of times they'll bring in rescue organizations or. Have adoption events at them. It's kind of like goat yoga, but you have puppies walking around, which is even cuter. Maybe they're not pooping on yoga so much as goat yoga. Do you remember when we did goat yoga?
[00:12:17] Jess: Yes. The bruises and scratches we got,
[00:12:20] Madison: it was hilarious. Fair warning to anyone out there going to goat yoga. It was a lot of fun. I will say that. But we went on a friend's bachelorette trip in Nashville and right before the class they say. Hey brides, just a heads up. If any of you all are getting married soon, maybe don't do this.
[00:12:38] I'm like, well, isn't the whole point and marketed towards the brides and the bachelorette trips anyways, they were not kidding. There were. Gnarly bruises and scratches on everyone's backs.
[00:12:51] Jess: Yeah. I have a scar on my lower back from one of the goats, but I wouldn't, I mean it was, it was a lot of
[00:12:57] Madison: fun. It was so fun.
[00:12:57] But they were like pooping everywhere. '
[00:13:00] Jess: cause they have, don't they have like all these stomachs and they just go poop all the time? I don't know. I need to look into that. Yeah, they were, they were warning us and they were just like, just let it be. I know, like poop. They had one person that hard poops, they had one person the whole entire.
[00:13:13] Session was just sweeping up poop. Yeah.
[00:13:15] Madison: All right. So we've gotten outta dog events. We're now into goat events, maybe one
[00:13:19] Jess: day. But those puppy yoga classes, I mean, I see them all over social media too. Yeah, they're so cute. I think I saw once, even on the news, they were promoting classes with the puppy yoga and the puppy like went to the bathroom on the yoga mat and the woman's like, well, it happens.
[00:13:34] I mean,
[00:13:34] Madison: it's probably the smallest amount though.
[00:13:36] Jess: Yeah. There are even breed specific events out there like Corgi Beach Day, corgi Nationals. SoCal Wiener Fest, Goldie Palooza. I haven't been to the Goldie Palooza or the Wiener Fest, but Corgi Beach Day, corgi Nationals, I'm sure those other two events, having all those same types of dogs, and I know they always invite like the honorary pups to come as well, but they are decked out with vendors, events, activations.
[00:14:03] Photo opportunities, competitions. It's a really fun day, but having the tools as a a successful dog owner is really gonna be key to having a great event.
[00:14:14] Madison: There's also a lot of. Breed specific parades around the holidays. Even in Scotland, there's a Scotty Dog Parade, which would be so cute to, so cute, fun.
[00:14:24] Jess: I've seen the holiday parades, the Santa runs, there's a lot of like five Ks that will allow you to bring your dog. There's dog races, not just Corgi races. Of course, I've seen Bassett Hounds, Wiener Dogs, bulldogs Bull. So there's a lot of fun events and I, again, I feel like it just keeps growing year after year of new events, new ideas.
[00:14:47] There's so many events out
[00:14:48] Madison: there that we haven't even been to yet, especially international ones I would love to attend. So if you know any. Put it in the Yapp It Out form. You can find that in the link in our bio at the Yap Corner pod on Instagram. And tell us about those. We've been to a lot of dog events throughout the years, and I'm just curious, what are some of the essential items that you bring when you attend those events?
[00:15:13] Jess: Definitely a dog water bottle. I'll bring like a bag of sorts, maybe even sometimes the dog backpack. But I have the water bottle treats, poop bags. If there is a theme, maybe a, a fun bandana or a costume, but I feel like that's pretty much like the base I go with just the basics.
[00:15:34] Madison: I definitely bring a backpack, especially when it's a hot event.
[00:15:38] You can easily throw your dog in there. Sometimes they even bring them a little hat. It's always cute, but also wipes. A big one and towels, if it's a, a beach event or something like that, will definitely bring something to wipe the dogs down because some of the vents get muddy dirty as they do their dog.
[00:15:55] So
[00:15:56] Jess: yeah, my car has at least two to three towels in the trunk just in case.
[00:16:00] Madison: I think I have wipes everywhere too. And just to wipe down them or the whatever. The car, if it gets messes everywhere. Yeah. Especially with the mud or sand, it gets so dirty.
[00:16:12] Jess: What about when you go to an event? What are some things you are checking out, scoping the space?
[00:16:20] Just kind of, you know, when you enter the space, what are you, what are you looking for?
[00:16:24] Madison: I always take a first glance at kinda what's going on. What kind of. Dogs are there. What kind of people are there? I know my dog better than anybody, and I know, for example, one of my dogs doesn't really like poodles, which is.
[00:16:39] Kind of random, but I just know that, but they love huskies. So if I see Huskies, I'm always like, oh, this is gonna be a great time. They're gonna love it. But if it's poodle, I have to be a little more cautious. Maybe I'll let them walk around if it's a fenced area and sniff the fence and see if they like it or if they're like pulling to inside and excited.
[00:16:58] Uh, one of our dog, my dogs has a, has a tail that you can tell if it's duck. So if they're not wagging their tail, they're not looking excited and having fun, then. I'll just leave
[00:17:09] Jess: and that's important. Events can be so much fun, but there are a handful of things that as dog owners and dog parents, you have to be aware.
[00:17:17] I think it comes from experience learning, community, figuring out, you know, what your dog likes and doesn't like. Having those basic fundamentals on dog training and making sure that you're in a safe environment to have fun and en enjoy the event. I
[00:17:34] Madison: think also when. If it's a place that we're going, such as a bark at the park event or an indoor place hosted by a organization, some of those places have vaccination rules or other rules, so I definitely make sure to read up on that before we go to a lot of events at a dog pool that has.
[00:17:56] Vaccination requirements, you have to be spayed all these things, and they ask for updated vaccines pretty regularly. So I just try to be proactive and send those in. But definitely check out the website of the place you're going or the rules of the event that you're going to 'cause every event is gonna be different.
[00:18:14] So maybe some don't have any rules at all, which could be great for you, but you just wanna. Be aware of, of what's kind of required of you and your dogs?
[00:18:24] Jess: I've been lucky that I haven't experienced anything traumatic at an event with Ziggy also, because I think I'm like paranoid and I just am looking everywhere at dog behaviors and dog owners because I've, I've seen and witnessed and heard stories from so many people of nightmare stories of
[00:18:45] Madison: mm-hmm.
[00:18:46] Jess: Getting, you know, a, a tossup with the dogs or. Attacked and you know, dogs are different on leash when they're off leash versus on leash. No doubt. I wanna go to event, experience it Foley, have fun, enjoy myself with Ziggy, but I'm very cautious of the surroundings we're in.
[00:19:05] Madison: Yeah, I definitely think it's one of those things you wanna check out again before you're in there or even while you're attending the event, maybe things start to take a turn and you're like, I need to leave.
[00:19:16] Just show yourself out there. Or if it's. Somebody's, you know, we've even been places where there's just a dog that's gone and the owner's nowhere around, and so we'll just notify somebody like, Hey, this dog doesn't seem to have a owner. Like maybe somebody wants to, to keep an eye on them. If the dog's doing something, maybe an appropriate one thing we always make sure to have is a caller with an ID tag.
[00:19:44] You never know if they're gonna get out or go somewhere, or somebody's gonna find them, like I just mentioned. So having that identification is really important so they can come home to us
[00:19:54] Jess: and if you're at a breed specific one and there are dogs all over that kind of look the same, having them stand out with a shirt or a bandana or something else, fun always is helpful.
[00:20:06] Madison: I've been to so many like Corgi Beach Day events where. They all look alike. And I'm like, somebody could easily take Apollo and not realize that they're taking
[00:20:17] Jess: Apollo. It's like being in an airport and taking somebody's luggage. No, I'm sure that's happened. That even has happened to us. Not that someone tried taking Ziggy, but we were at the Dog Beach one morning and a couple Ziggy approached them and the couple thought it was their dog, Millie.
[00:20:32] And they're like, where did your harness go, Millie? And then they looked down and they're like, oh wait. You're not Millie. And then we met and we've been friends ever since, but so easily to, you know, just you're glancing through and. You see it and you're like, oh, there's my dog. Oh, nope, not my dog. Yep.
[00:20:48] Madison: We're also very mindful of checking the weather before an event. It gets really hot on pavement, as most dog owners know. So if it's too hot for our pups, we'll kind of put our hand on the ground and just check it. You
[00:21:02] Jess: know, you're a dog parent when you're down on the ground with your hands flipping over.
[00:21:08] Is it too hot? Yeah. I love seeing just those little things like that. There's other ones too. You're like, that's a dog parent checking. Checking the little things.
[00:21:18] Madison: And I remember before I had a dog, I always thought, oh, they just like put shoes on their dog. 'cause they're cute. I mean, yes, but also because the pavement's hot.
[00:21:27] And again, especially where we are now, it gets so hot that they can easily burn their paw pads. So definitely mindful of that. When we go to events, if it's really hot, maybe bring some shade to, if it's at a beach or or wherever, you can just make sure they're. Keeping cool.
[00:21:45] Jess: I love seeing the dogs that are in carriers or wagons or strollers, and there's a personal fan on it.
[00:21:52] Amazing. I'm like, I wanna live that life. Yes. I wanna, yeah, I definitely wanna come back in this life as a dog with a, what do they call 'em? Dink wads.
[00:22:02] Madison: Yeah.
[00:22:03] Jess: The double income. No kids. No kids. With a dog. With a dog. I want that life.
[00:22:08] Madison: Yeah. Same honestly. We just talked about heat. I try not to bring the dogs when it's too hot for them, of course, but also if they're sick, not feeling well, you wanna be mindful of other dogs and not getting them sick.
[00:22:21] So we definitely keep our dogs home.
[00:22:24] Jess: When Ziggy was young, I think she was maybe one or two, we went to a dog pool party and Kennel cough went through all the attendees there. So that was our first time experience kennel cough with a dog. So we took her to the vet. And they were like, it's kind of viral.
[00:22:40] It'll go away. But just monitor
[00:22:43] Madison: makes me think of something too that I'm just now realizing is a lot of the vaccinations and things that we see are specific, maybe even to the area. For example, we have. Rattlesnakes around here. So sometimes they recommend like rattlesnake training or poison or what whatnot.
[00:23:02] And I'm realizing that as we travel and go places, I should probably look into what the local animals or if there's something like that to be more aware of. Even on, we're so aware of like Foxtails. We've had those go into Apollo's nose when he was a puppy.
[00:23:18] Jess: Oh my gosh. And. That had to be a nightmare.
[00:23:21] Madison: Well, it's crazy 'cause when we first moved here, or when I first moved here, I'm from Florida.
[00:23:27] There's no Fox Tales in Florida. And so we had just got Apollo and we were walking on a trail with him and a guy walks past us and he's like, Hey, just so you know, like there's these things called Fox tales, but really it's a way for vets to, to get your money. They're not really that bad for your dog.
[00:23:45] And he's like, there's even boats that vets have that name their. Boat foxtail or whatever. And I thought that was like crazy, but I was like, okay, whatever. We kept walking and immediately Apollo starts like sneezing and we're like, oh gosh. And I saw a foxtail go into his nose, took him to the er. $800 later they got it removed and I went to do some digging online and everybody's like, no, those are like horrible for your dog.
[00:24:14] But before that, I had no idea. So anytime. We have like friends or people come out to California with their dog, I try to make them aware that there's foxtails and, and that just brings me back to a point that there's things in other states that we're not aware of. So I'm, I'm wondering what those are.
[00:24:31] Jess: That's not a bad idea. And it's a good reminder that even a simple search on the internet, I'm sure you can find information specific to that area of what to look out for for your dog and the dangers. And things to be cautious about. I wonder. A good reminder.
[00:24:47] Madison: Yeah. I wonder if there's a resource out there.
[00:24:48] I'm just curious, like if anybody knows of anything, I'd be. Great to know of. Like a page is like, if you go to this state, these are the things to watch for your dog. There's gotta
[00:24:59] Jess: be something out there has to be. We'll do some research. Yeah. We'll share it if we find it.
[00:25:03] Madison: Mm-hmm. Jess, you've had a lot of experience with planning events.
[00:25:07] You've hosted, uh, birthday parties. I mean, we've both hosted birthday parties for our dogs, but one of 'em was really cool where you had a charity fundraiser for. Ziggy's party. Do you wanna talk a little bit about
[00:25:21] Jess: throwing an event? I love events. Anytime I have an excuse to throw a party, an event, a function, I'm gonna lean all in.
[00:25:31] So we've done a couple different things with Ziggy with around the Corgi racing before. Little stumps racing started every year for Ziggy's birthday. We did Ziggy's Dash or something like that, and it was tied with the fundraiser. We raised money for Scoop San Diego local nonprofit that puts on an ice cream festival and you have an entry fee and we rent out a whole dog park.
[00:25:56] So I went to the Parks and Rec office of the city and rented out the space and they allow you to do that, which was so cool. And you can have like the whole designated dog pen. For your event, and all you have to do is fill out a form, provide you information, pay a fee, and then you have the date locked in.
[00:26:16] So that's been a really fun event. I've also done our annual gorgeous Gallant Times's day. So we get together the Corgi moms of our, kind of our OG group of Corgi moms in San Diego. We don't have the dogs there besides Ziggy. And we all come in Valentine's Day Corgi socks. We do fun activities. We just get to hang out without the dogs, which is a very rare moment for us.
[00:26:43] Madison: I will say too, we have Corgi shaped ice cubes.
[00:26:46] Jess: Everything is Corgi around these events, and I don't even think it's just Corgi. There's tons of other dog decor and little details that you can get. I just happen to find all the Corgi stuff. There's an Instagram account out there called Corgi Finds, and I use that as a resource to find.
[00:27:03] Corgi ga, like Valentine's Day stuff
[00:27:05] Madison: and I'm sure there's other breed specific, or even dog, just general decor and stuff. Even for Apollo's birthday party, I had went to Target and I found, I said birthday party. I'm not kidding. This dog knows the word party, birthday party. See, he looks at me. It's crazy.
[00:27:25] It's one of those words that we're like, he knows what a birthday party is now, but they had a tablecloth with like doggy paw prints and hats with doggy paw prints and it's just the cutest stuff. Even have like treat bags, so if you're throwing your dog a birthday party, go to Target. They have a lot of great stuff.
[00:27:43] Jess: We've definitely had our fair share of dog parties, dog birthdays. We did a baby shower. Not for a dog, it was for two humans. But we did funny thing, I mean, wasn't that funny when we were like, oh yeah, we got a baby shower, and they're like, like, the dog is pregnant. You're throwing a baby shower for the dog.
[00:28:02] We're like, no, the owners, well, we
[00:28:05] Madison: even did it at the dog park in during COVID and we had pictures of all the puppies and you had to guess like which puppy was which dog. And somebody had walked up and been like. Oh, what a dog. What's going on here? Yeah. We're like, oh no, that
[00:28:23] Jess: one of our friends see her.
[00:28:24] She's pregnant. And every holiday there were parties for Halloween. The ugly sweater parties. Gosh, I felt like there were so many, especially during that early time of 2020 to 2023, I feel like. There were events almost every weekend that we were going to. It slowed down a lot.
[00:28:47] Madison: Yeah. Now we focus a lot more on.
[00:28:50] Events, like I think I still do a lot of bark at the park and, and other events with maybe a smaller group or people have moved, people have had kids. So things kind of change, but it's still kept us together. Especially like the annual gorgeous gines. We love that. I'm curious what other events people are throwing out there, though.
[00:29:09] We could always use some ideas. Always. I think it's time for a game. It's time for a game. We're gonna get into Zoomy mode again. Love it. Love zoom. Bring back zoom mode. So this will be some rapid fire questions. I will ask you a couple and then you can ask me some. Would you rather attend a dog costume
[00:29:29] Jess: parade or a dog surfing competition?
[00:29:32] Dog surfing competition. Those are so cool. I've only been to a couple and every time I've gone. It's such a vibe. Didn't you try to do surfing with Ziggy? Yes. We tried surfing with surfing Corgi, jojo, and it just was not Ziggy's sport. She jumped off that surfboard and ran to the stairs of the beach. But a paddleboard loves the paddleboard.
[00:29:58] Madison: Well, I think we know why she doesn't like water. No, it got wet on the surfboard, but on a paddleboard, it's almost like keeping her grounded. I don't think she likes the waves either. Oh yeah, they are scary. Ziggy. Especially in California. I don't blame you.
[00:30:13] Jess: What's your pup wearing to the pet gala?
[00:30:15] Madison: I would love to see Apollo in a tux, like a little cute tux, like black tie for a wedding.
[00:30:21] He actually wore a bow tie and it's. The cutest thing in the whole world. So that would be really adorable for Gemini. Hmm. Obviously a awesome dress. Maybe may buy some designer in la That would be so cool. Well, that's Tika the Iggy for some tips though. She's got the best outfits. Mm-hmm. Custom made custom for her body too, 'cause she's a little icky and Gemini's a long girl of as we mentioned.
[00:30:50] So nothing I will buy will fit her. I would have to get a custom made brunch with your dog or yappy hour at the park.
[00:30:58] Jess: I love a good brunch. Yappy hours are fun. I'm gonna pick brunch. Favorite dog friendly event, snack cupcake or peanut butter ice cream.
[00:31:08] Madison: Where's the dogs? We need to bring them in for
[00:31:09] Jess: their thoughts on this one.
[00:31:10] It'd be fun, right? Like you line up the treats and you see which they like, which I'm sure there are dogs that have the preference, but I'm also like, dogs will eat anything.
[00:31:21] Madison: I think my dogs though go psycho for peanut butter. So the peanut butter ice cream might be the hit. I don't know though.
[00:31:27] Jess: We'll have to try.
[00:31:28] Madison: They would swallow the pup cake hole, so I don't know. It might be dangerous, but yes, we should try. Dog festival or dog beach day.
[00:31:36] Jess: Dog beach day. I love bringing the dog out onto the beach. It's so fun. Especially a beautiful day. Can't beat him. If your dog had a booth at a market, what would they be selling?
[00:31:47] Madison: Apollo would be selling balls like tennis, tennis balls to confirm. He is ball obsessed. So he would actually, I don't even know if he'd sell 'em though. He'd be like, these are mine. You wouldn't want to sell them. Yeah. He would start grabbing 'em off and be like, the dog would come to get one. He'd be like, Nope.
[00:32:04] Taking that one. But he would, I mean, that would be what he sells. Gemini would sell lizards. All the lizards that she caught, they'd be like laid on display. She'd be like, this one's worth a lot. I
[00:32:16] Jess: had a chase around this one in the backyard for a month, thinking of an event like a market. And the dogs are selling things.
[00:32:23] This is a really fun question to ask people. What, what would their dog be selling?
[00:32:27] Madison: Yeah. I feel like I really can think on that some more, but I'm just picturing like a whole farmer's market with dogs in their booth. It'd be really cute. Like TV show or, or a book or kids' book. So cute. What's your dog's red carpet walk song?
[00:32:43] Jess: Gosh, I have no idea. Ziggy's walked the red carpet she has, and it was a royal blue carpet. We got invited through SoCal coordination. Kelly brought us on with Netflix and it was for the Crown the final season. So we were up in Beverly Hills and obviously the Crown is the royal family with the Corgis and the Queen.
[00:33:07] So we had Ziggy walking the carpet. Netflix did some footage before the event started. They put a camera on her back walking the carpet into the theater. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I. They had a PR assistant holding a sign saying, Ziggy the Corgi. And all the photographers were yelling, Ziggy, Ziggy over here, Ziggy for the queen, smile for the queen.
[00:33:31] And then everyone thought Ziggy was the Corgi in the show because the first episode opens up with a dog and then the queen with the corgis, everyone turns back and they're like, that's the Corgi. And we couldn't get out of that place because everyone thought. That was the Corgi and we just gave up and we said, yep, this is the Corgi.
[00:33:50] So it was
[00:33:50] Madison: a
[00:33:50] Jess: lot. You
[00:33:51] Madison: need to bring back that footage. We need to see
[00:33:53] Jess: it. Yeah, definitely throw that up. But her walkout song, oh
[00:33:56] Madison: yeah, I forgot that was the question.
[00:33:58] Jess: Probably like anything sassy. So what's a sassy song
[00:34:03] Madison: like Doja Cat or somebody, something
[00:34:05] Jess: like that? It that, that's her personality.
[00:34:08] Madison: Lizzo. I don't know.
[00:34:10] I was gonna say Taylor Swift, but I don't think so. She's, is she a swifty? I dunno how to answer this.
[00:34:18] Jess: No, Ziggy, I dressed her up in that costume. The Taylor Swift. Oh, she was Ziggy Swift. That's right. I spent hours. Oh my gosh. You gluing individual gems on her lover bodysuit. It was for a Halloween. And a Corgi race with the Denver Broncos that they were playing the Chiefs.
[00:34:40] And I was like, Taylor's gonna be there. This is my chance to get her attention with a Corgi. And it was funny, Taylor didn't end up being there, but it caught on that there was a Corgi in the halftime race, dressed as Taylor. So there was a headline saying, Taylor Swift not present, but Taylor in the form of a Corgi present on the field.
[00:35:01] So it was a fun little
[00:35:01] Madison: moment. Too bad she's a cap lady. Yeah. But yeah,
[00:35:06] Jess: I have seen her like hold a dog.
[00:35:08] Madison: Oh,
[00:35:08] Jess: I'm
[00:35:08] Madison: saying, I'm not saying she doesn't love a dog. I just know she, but she has loves cats. She's got the cats.
[00:35:12] Jess: Yeah.
[00:35:13] Madison: But Ziggy swift, man. That thing took you hours to make. That's crazy.
[00:35:17] Jess: Yeah. I'll throw, I'll throw it up in the little like social video.
[00:35:20] So cute. What is the best dog event location? A beach, city or rooftop? I
[00:35:26] Madison: think my dogs would be scared of heights. I don't know, but I would be scared that they would jump over some type of rooftop lounge thing. So I'm gonna say beach, because they both love the beach. They love. Swimming and playing fetch in the water.
[00:35:41] So
[00:35:42] Jess: your dogs get immediate zoomies when they touch sand.
[00:35:45] Madison: It's crazy. It's like sand is makes 'em go psycho and they just like run and get spins and all of it. So they love the beach. Anytime we can throw a birthday party, two bad, their birthdays are around the colder months. But we try to, we try to do the beach 'cause they love it.
[00:36:00] You're organizing a dog event. What's the theme?
[00:36:03] Jess: Ice cream. Everything and anything. Ice cream, dog ice cream, human ice cream. I've done that with in the past with Ziggy's parties as an ice cream party.
[00:36:14] Madison: I was gonna say, you invited a bunch of ice cream vendors too, and they had doggy ice cream. Yeah,
[00:36:18] Jess: we did that one year.
[00:36:19] We had like three different local ice cream shops.
[00:36:22] Madison: Yeah, you both love ice cream, so there's always ice cream involved. When you're around these two.
[00:36:28] Jess: Who's your dog bringing as their plus one to the bark in the park event?
[00:36:32] Madison: It's usually Ziggy Polo. Ziggy Gem, Ziggy. Dynamic duos. We love 'em all. So definitely Ziggy.
[00:36:42] If not Ziggy, then it's Frijolito. 'cause Frijolito loves bark at the park too.
[00:36:47] Jess: We love Reho.
[00:36:48] Madison: We love Reho.
[00:36:49] Jess: We love his tail.
[00:36:51] Madison: Yeah, it's so expressive. It goes like
[00:36:53] Jess: his big ears.
[00:36:55] Madison: Is your dog more but social butterfly or
[00:36:57] Jess: stick by your side type? It depends on the environment we're in. If we're. In a small group, she is a social butterfly, and it's not with the dogs, it's with the people.
[00:37:09] But if we're at a big event, I call her my shadow. Like if I'm walking around a big event, like at Corgi Beach Day, she will be right by my side almost as if she's my shadow, which I don't hate. Because then she's right by me, but if she's not in my shadow, I just look at the groups of people because she's more likely to be with people than around the dogs.
[00:37:30] Mm-hmm. Just like wiggling your nub tail. Not all dogs have a nub, so maybe you can clarify what a nub is.
[00:37:40] Madison: Okay. So our dogs, they don't have the full tail. They were docked. So they look like a little nub and it's just a nub that wags back and forth. We can, we could play a video for you all to see if you haven't seen it before, it's really cute, but the tail is just as cute.
[00:37:58] But yeah, she'll, she'll wiggle. Wiggle her nub or butt really fast, especially when there's humans around.
[00:38:04] Jess: Yeah. So in that, in that sense, she's very much a social butterfly. Mm-hmm.
[00:38:08] Madison: Making her noises and getting all happy. She's so cute.
[00:38:12] Jess: Last question of the Zoomie mode. What is that one item that is a must bring to every event?
[00:38:18] Probably our little
[00:38:19] Madison: chunk water bottle. We love that water bottle. And little gulp. There you go. Okay. Thank you. So to wrap things up, we're gonna share some events happening around the world over the next few months. Take our
[00:38:32] Jess: phones out. Read through our research here. Why don't you kick us off with June?
[00:38:38] So June there is
[00:38:40] Madison: Dog Fest. It's happening in multiple cities around the us, including Washington d, c, and Seattle. It's a family friendly festival celebrating dogs and raising funds for Canine Companions.
[00:38:52] Jess: In July, we have P Utopia Festival at Big Bear Lake, California, that towards the end of July. It's a dog centric festival with activities and vendors and we love big bear, lots of
[00:39:06] Madison: dog friendly cabins that are available there and, and the lake, and so many things to do with your dog.
[00:39:12] In August, there's the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica, California on August 3rd, and dogs can showcase their surfing skills.
[00:39:21] Jess: And if you have never been to a dog surfing competition, it is something to experience once in your life. You have dogs, big dogs to small dogs, you do tandem. With a human and a dog, they'll put four dogs on a surfboard.
[00:39:36] It's incredible what some of these dogs do, and they love to be out there. I've seen a dog drag his own surfboard out to the water to go surfing. I
[00:39:44] Madison: was gonna say, a lot of times they hook like a rope on it and the dog pulls their surfboard out. That's so cute.
[00:39:50] Jess: In October is the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in New York City.
[00:39:54] This one goes viral. It is everywhere. The most creative Halloween costumes I've ever seen. If I need inspiration, I will Google this event and look at the Halloween costumes. But not only are the dogs dressed up the owners, and maybe not just one owner, it is a whole group activity where they are a group costume.
[00:40:15] Madison: It's a lot of great inspiration, but also the, just creativity that goes into not just putting the costume, but they'll make a whole like wagon and then decorate that with a whole setup. It's, it's crazy to see.
[00:40:28] Jess: Yeah. I wanna experience that one.
[00:40:30] Madison: Yeah. Same here in November, there's dog friendly cruise departing from Tampa, which we've talked about.
[00:40:37] That's the Margarita Villa of the sea. Maybe we'll be on that. Who knows? Looking at our international calendar, there are a lot of events happening around the globe in June. There's dog tival happening in Broadlands Park in the uk, June 1st to second, and it's a dog friendly festival featuring live music, food stalls and dog
[00:40:57] Jess: displays.
[00:40:58] In Thailand, you have the Thailand International Dog Show. Major event showcasing pet products, services, activities for your dogs.
[00:41:06] Madison: In August, there's the World Dog Show in Helsinki, Finland. It's an international gathering, celebrating dogs with various activities and showcases.
[00:41:15] Jess: In Shanghai, you have the Pet Fair Asia, one of the largest pet industry exhibitions in Asia featuring products, services, and all those things for your pups.
[00:41:25] Madison: Amazing. But in September, there's Dog Fest, which again mentioned, and this happening in the us. Also happening in the uk, so check that
[00:41:34] Jess: out.
[00:41:34] Madison: Wow.
[00:41:34] Jess: So many different dog events that we talked about today, and that's only a sliver of what's actually out there. Not only we talked about ones in the US but internationally.
[00:41:43] I'm sure there are events that you all have been to. Put it in our Yap It Out forum that you can find in our link bio at the Yap Corner pod on Instagram and TikTok.
