[00:00:00] Jess: At the beach. At the beach, at the beach Z. He is like, can you put my blanket down?

[00:00:11] Madison: Can you, I excuse. See? Are you gonna put it over you tent? You wanna,

[00:00:17] Jess: there's our blanket.

[00:00:19] Madison: It's

[00:00:19] Jess: gonna get Sandy. Here's the studio. Here's the studio. Tired puppies. We met a lot of dog parents. We met sand all over your face. Oh boy.

[00:00:29] Oh, the shake. I mean, at this point, yeah, they stand everywhere. It's fine. Well, as you can see, we are on site here at a Dog Beach. Delmar Dog Beach. One of our favorites. Yeah. It's not our favorite. It is. Yeah. Anyways, let's kick this off. Welcome to the Yap Corner, a podcast for dog parents by

[00:00:51] Madison: dog parents.

[00:00:52] We're your host, Madison Bennett and Jess Randberg. Two dog obsessed humans who know that life. It's just better with a pup. We're not here

[00:01:00] Jess: to talk about the debates of training or food, just the everyday chaos and joy of life with our pups. So grab your pup. Your drink, your beach towel blanket and let's yap about it all.

[00:01:16] Yeah. So

[00:01:17] Madison: we met a lot of cool dog parents today. Played some fun games with them. The dogs are having a lot of fun. They're out running in the water. So I mean, your

[00:01:25] Jess: dogs are going, look at Ziggy

[00:01:27] Madison: Ziggy's

[00:01:27] Jess: out

[00:01:28] Madison: Ziggy's, like, I'm just chill here.

[00:01:29] Jess: Yeah. She's like, great, we're gonna lay down. I'm all for that. But your dogs, I mean Gem, gem is just running, still

[00:01:37] Madison: going.

[00:01:38] She won't stop. I thought they were tired for a second, but we can't

[00:01:41] Jess: beat this. No, this is life. And you take it for granted. It's so easy. I know. But we've been here what, like three, four hours? No, 3, 4, 2 hours.

[00:01:53] Madison: Was that Sarah parking meters about to expire? Yes. Four hours. We all wrap this up. I was like,

[00:01:58] Jess: um, this

[00:01:59] Madison: episode is now over.

[00:02:00] Thanks for joining. Yeah.

[00:02:01] Jess: Okay. Because they take their tickets serious here. Yeah. And they're intense anyways. So we are doing our dog parents in the wild episode today. Oh my gosh. Did you get sprayed with water? I think it's the waves. Oh, look at them. Go. Because I think the tide is rising. I be so distracted.

[00:02:18] There's so many lot. Didn't you just lick the, and I'm sure there's gonna be dogs that come like in and out and up here. Hopefully it'll pee on us because you know, when you're at a dog beach, your stuff is gonna get peed on and if people get upset about it,

[00:02:33] Madison: yeah,

[00:02:34] Jess: you just have to like. Wow. I don't mesh it off.

[00:02:37] Yeah. Literally. It's gonna, it's gonna happen. Shake it off then don't put your stuff down on the ground. And it just happens. It just happens. We got

[00:02:44] Madison: our stuff peed

[00:02:45] Jess: on already. Yeah. Which again, no surprise. And I have a mesh bag, so that doesn't really help. It literally just goes

[00:02:50] Madison: straight through all your stuff sp on it, so

[00:02:54] Jess: that's great.

[00:02:55] So we did some fun like zoomie mode questions with dog parents. We asked parents just like. What it meant to be a dog parent. We gotta talk to dog, dads dog. Wow. Which we haven't really interacted with. Yeah. I guess we haven't interacted with like, tons of people on the podcast. Like in person. This is our fir first guest.

[00:03:14] Yeah,

[00:03:15] Madison: we, yeah. So thanks everyone that joined us. Oh. Oh, hi. You wanna join us Comea? Hi,

[00:03:21] Jess: Apollo's. Right here. Good boy. At least you have that like hot pink I know Life jacket on her so you can really see her.

[00:03:28] Madison: Yeah, so I put the dogs in life jackets not 'cause they can't swim, which everyone asked me that. But because the waves here are insane, which we'll have to turn this around at some point and show you all.

[00:03:40] But I just worry 'cause I can barely swim in these waves if they can. So I

[00:03:44] Jess: know when you were like, what are you gonna wear? And I was like, I'm gonna be as like cozy, warm as possible. And you're like, well I might have to go in the water. I was like, that's not my journey. But that is, that is potentially yours.

[00:03:55] Always

[00:03:56] Madison: mine. My feet are at least getting wet. I know that for a fact. But Gemini's just out doing her own thing, running with the big dogs. Apollo's over here, living his own life. What is he doing? Just being a goof. He's a goopy, goober's, high energy. There's a

[00:04:13] Jess: lot going on.

[00:04:13] Madison: Yeah. That's what happens when you're a 2-year-old little pup.

[00:04:17] You just like wanna, oh, you're, well, why would you do that? Because I love him. It don't matter. They've been rolling in. I know. I know. Who knows?

[00:04:29] Jess: Alo. Look at him. Oh wait, we gotta flip it.

[00:04:32] Madison: Don't, it might scare

[00:04:33] Jess: him.

[00:04:37] Helo. Lay down. So to cue us into our zoomie mode questions, these were, we've played zoomie mode on the podcast before, so we're gonna head over to those questions with dog parents, morning walks or sunset strolls, morning walks. What is the weirdest thing your dog is obsessed with? Well,

[00:04:58] Dog Owner 1: London is obsessed with, she's digging and she sticks her nose like directly in the sand.

[00:05:03] I think it's a husky thing. And then Luna, she does this like. Zoomie thing where she looks like a, like a, a top spinning on its head and she just rolls around the house and she straps to when she's doing it and tap dances. So it's kind of really strange, but she loves doing it around the apartment. How often do you come to the beach with them?

[00:05:22] Dog Owner 2: Six days a week, probably. Almost two to four hours a day. Yeah, sometimes twice a day.

[00:05:27] Jess: Are they on the couch or the bed?

[00:05:28] Dog Owner 2: Well, I don't have a couch. I have recliners and they're in both places. Dad. Dad and ts like the two most adventurous ones. They're kind of off by themselves most. Mm-hmm. And Big Whitey and his mom, white Paws.

[00:05:42] Jess: Who's more high maintenance? You or your dogs? Definitely my dogs. Why do you guys come to the dog beach with them?

[00:05:48] Dog Owner 3: Because, um, ever since we got both of them together, they just like love playing and like, like being real dogs. So

[00:05:56] Jess: is your dog a beach goer or a dog park?

[00:05:58] Dog Owner 4: Beach goer.

[00:05:59] Jess: Do they like a squeaky toy or tennis ball?

[00:06:01] Dog Owner 4: Squeaky toy.

[00:06:02] Jess: What kind of treats? A biscuit or a bone?

[00:06:04] Dog Owner 4: Usually like pieces of chicken.

[00:06:06] Dog Owners 5: Do you like dogs first? I love dogs. Someone doesn't like dogs? Do you have to? I know to about that. It's a problem.

[00:06:14] Jess: Tennis ball or squeaky toy tennis ball. A puppucino or a peanut butter snack? Peanut butter snack

[00:06:20] Dog Owner 1: for sure.

[00:06:20] Jess: Is your dog sleeping in your bed? Or their bed.

[00:06:23] Dog Owner 1: I would love for them to sleep in my bed, but they refuse 'cause huskies just like to be like by themselves and sprawled out. So it's very sad. Puff

[00:06:30] Jess: cup or a peanut butter treat.

[00:06:32] Dog Owner 4: Peanut butter.

[00:06:32] Madison: Do you guys dogs sleep in your bed or do they sleep on? No. Okay.

[00:06:36] Controversial.

[00:06:37] Dog Owners 5: No, no, no. Wait, no. We need to get sleep at night. They have. They're so funky. Yeah, they do, but they have dog. We have so many dog beds. It's a little, I just bought two more this week. I mean, we have a shocking number of dog beds and they still will sleep on the couches too.

[00:06:53] Jess: Do they like bones or like treat biscuits?

[00:06:56] Dog Owner 2: They love bones. I, I get marrow bones all the time. They don't. Both the bones with the marrow in 'em. And then, um, other favorite treat they have, what is it? Bully Sticks. Okay. Yeah. It's like leather, basically like raw hide and I don't wanna say the other part of it. Yeah. Of what

[00:07:11] Jess: we all, we all know what a bully stick is here.

[00:07:13] Yeah. What It's dog parents know what it is. Well, that was so fun. I don't think they were really fully getting what we were about to ask 'em when we're like, Hey, we have this podcast about dog parents. We wanna play zoomie mode. They're like, what's Zoomie mode? We're like this or

[00:07:26] Madison: that. Yeah. But that was a lot of fun.

[00:07:29] That was so much fun. So now we're gonna head into a segment that we are called. If your dog could speak, what would they say?

[00:07:37] Dog Owner 3: Benny would probably say, when are we going home? Because he hates being around like dogs. He's more of like, he likes people, human dog. And then, um, Charlie just loves every, everything.

[00:07:45] So he just likes to say hi and then leave. But like, um, do they like the water? Uh, Benny actually loves to swim. Oh, okay. But we can't really like, throw 'em in a big ocean, so we try to like throw 'em in over there. In the little like kind of pond area. Um, Charlie does not know how to swim.

[00:08:03] Madison: Oh, no, he does not.

[00:08:05] So have you tried like, putting on a pool or anything? Yeah, he's

[00:08:07] Dog Owner 3: all like, he's all like spazz. Yeah. He's, he's a lot of energy. He's eight years old. Oh. And then Benny is six.

[00:08:14] Madison: Okay. They're close in age, so, oh yeah. They play a lot. They play well together.

[00:08:17] Dog Owner 3: Um. So Charlie was an only child for about a year, and then I brought Benny home and he was like, what the hell,

[00:08:25] Madison: mom?

[00:08:27] Who is this dog? So as the year's got like

[00:08:30] Dog Owner 3: gone by, they've gotten a lot closer, but honestly, like they're brothers. Like he, he, he, I know he secretly loves, he loves Betty.

[00:08:39] Dog Owner 4: Hopefully she'd be saying Thank you so much for taking me to the beach. I'm having a great time. Everyone's got their dog out and, uh, yeah, we're just happy to be here.

[00:08:46] Jess: We also asked a handful of dog owners what it means to be a dog parent, so let's hear what they have to say.

[00:08:53] Dog Owner 4: Being a dog parent is a huge responsibility. Um, a lot of people need to understand that. It does come with a lot of work and effort, but it all pays off in the end. Dogs are a great pet. They're a good companion.

[00:09:04] And I really enjoy it.

[00:09:05] Dog Owner 1: It means loving something more than you love yourself, even though you can't afford it. It's kind of like having kids, but it's more detrimental because then the kids like, get second, second place. So it sucks sometimes, but they're, they're, they're forgiving and loyal, so yeah, that's what it's, that's what it means to be a parent for a dog.

[00:09:23] What is your dog's favorite part of the beach? Like what do you guys love

[00:09:26] Madison: The other dogs?

[00:09:27] Dog Owners 5: The other dogs? Yeah. Actually him.

[00:09:29] Dog Owner 2: The favorite, his favorite is the women.

[00:09:31] Dog Owners 5: Oh, he's, yeah, ladies, he's, he loves seeing other dogs, but he will pick out all the prettiest ladies on the beach. Yeah. And head straight for them to get attention.

[00:09:41] It's ridiculous. He's very good

[00:09:43] Dog Owner 2: at

[00:09:43] Dog Owners 5: that.

[00:09:43] Dog Owner 2: Yes. He's got a. Like a dog sense, maybe a seventh sense, not the sixth sense, but the seventh sense

[00:09:49] Madison: for women. Yes. Only for women. Specifically for pretty girls, women especially Ziggy.

[00:09:57] Dog Owner 2: This one has no sense at all. You

[00:09:58] Madison: don't

[00:09:58] Dog Owners 5: not. You wanna say he's like, nah, nah. What do you wanna say?

[00:10:03] He says, I love to play. You like to back? Yeah. He comes up, tries to play with every dog In his mind. He's small. Yes. Oh, okay. So he really loves Chihuahuas. And you know, chihuahuas don't like any other dogs. Oh. So that, that causes some conflict. He is like, don't you wanna play with me and I, no. Our dogs think they're big dogs, so that's, yeah.

[00:10:20] Oh my gosh, they're so cute. Really sweet. Look at the sweet one. This little one's so cute. How old is Ziggy?

[00:10:26] Jess: Ziggy is five. Yeah. Ziggy. Talk about the pups. You've got four of 'em. Why four?

[00:10:33] Dog Owner 2: I had two when I first moved in. I moved up to Delmar Dog Reach, basically to be here for this place. This guy loves every person, every dog, and he won't sit still if I talk to a per.

[00:10:44] I'm surprised he's still here, because if I talk to a person, he's gone. He's off like not having it. This guy right here, he came to play. He came to this world to play, not to sit around, listen and talk. You know? This is a daddy of them all.

[00:10:59] Jess: Rex, what's his, what's his name? Rex.

[00:11:02] Dog Owner 2: Rex. Yeah.

[00:11:03] Jess: Hi there buddy.

[00:11:04] Dog Owner 2: He normally has dreadlocks, like really long, but I trimmed him down recently.

[00:11:09] I caught this guy swimming across the river by himself

[00:11:11] Jess: here.

[00:11:12] Dog Owner 2: Yeah. Yeah. I like And that's and

[00:11:14] Jess: that's how you like rescued him?

[00:11:16] Dog Owner 2: No,

[00:11:16] Jess: no,

[00:11:16] Dog Owner 2: no. That he just got lost one day. But that's one of the good memories of this guy catching him doing the, the crazy stuff that he does when I'm not looking. I was wondering where he was.

[00:11:26] I'm like, where's Rex looking everywhere. I was like, I, I hope he is not trying to cross the river. I run over there and he's crossing the river by himself. Just

[00:11:36] Madison: cold.

[00:11:37] Dog Owner 2: Yeah, he's crazy. This guy is crazy.

[00:11:39] Madison: It's been a great day at the beach. We got to interact with a lot of fun dog parents and ask them some fun questions, some deeper questions, and kind of interact with humans.

[00:11:50] We, it's always just us two and our dog, so that was super fun. I love today, and I think my favorite part was all the. Parents that really dove into why they got their dog, how they got their dog, what it means to them to have a dog. And they really stepped back and were like, Hmm, I haven't thought about that before.

[00:12:10] Wow. I know.

[00:12:11] Jess: I was shocked by some of the people when we asked them like, what does it mean to be a dog parent? What does it mean to be a dog dad? And yeah, they paused and said, wow, I haven't thought about that. Yeah. Or you know, the ones that have amazing stories of their dogs and what it means to them to.

[00:12:27] I have a dog in their life. It was cool. Interacting really cool with people here and it's the first time we've done anything like this. So there'll be more of this

[00:12:37] Madison: though, for sure. Yeah, and we, and it's

[00:12:38] Jess: always like nerve wracking going up to people. You don't wanna inconvenience them, especially at the beach.

[00:12:44] Madison: People are, you know, here to be at the beach. But we're also at a dog beach and people love talking about their dogs and talking with other dog parents, so it's really cool to like meet other people too. At the dog beach, a lot of times I'm just throwing the ball. And minding my own business. So that'll, which

[00:12:58] Jess: there's nothing wrong with that.

[00:13:00] And we've had people that said, you know, I'm not interested and totally good. Like, please, you know, enjoy, enjoy the beach. Yeah. And have a good day. I honestly expected

[00:13:07] Madison: more of that though, so I was surprised and happy that people were willing and trusting us to talk to them. They're like, I don't know who these people are, but this is so fun.

[00:13:18] So it was,

[00:13:19] Jess: it was encouraging, like once you started having those conversations with people, I mean, I think we talked to a good amount of people. And hearing their responses and having conversations, it, it was encouraging to like, keep going and like wanna talk to more dog parents. Yeah.

[00:13:34] Madison: And there were some people that passed a by were like, oh, I wanna meet your dog and talk to your dog.

[00:13:38] Or their dogs would come up or they, there was even people without dogs and they just came and wanted to say hi to our dogs or just chat. So that was cool too.

[00:13:47] Jess: Yeah. I interacted with a family and it was a dad with his two kids. And he said, yeah, they just, you know, they, he's got four kids. They do have a cat.

[00:13:56] Oh. But their life is very hectic and it just isn't the right as I can imagine. Yeah. It's just like he, and it was great, like hearing from him and like having open conversation, he's like, it's just not the right time and place to have a dog. So we come to the dog beach and get our dog fixed and the kids have so much fun.

[00:14:13] Get the dog fixed. And he goes, and when the kids get older, we will, we'll get a dog. That's fun. So

[00:14:19] Madison: that's

[00:14:19] Jess: cool.

[00:14:20] Madison: I've actually seen that before at the park. Like a lot of people bring their kids and they're just like, yeah, my kid just wants to like play and pet the dogs, but we don't have time for a dog.

[00:14:28] And I, I respect that too. 'cause having a dog, it takes a lot of time and Yeah, I think so. They understand that it's not right for them right now.

[00:14:35] Jess: Yeah. We talked to a dog dad and he talked about how it's a responsibility and I thought I was not expecting that response. You know, I'm, I'm expecting like very lighthearted responses to our questions.

[00:14:48] But he was like, yeah, no, it's responsibility and it's a lot and people don't realize it, but it is. Yeah.

[00:14:54] Madison: Always love coming to the dog beach. 'cause you see so many different dogs. It's not just

[00:14:58] Jess: ese with you. Yeah. What kind of dogs do we have around us? We've got a German Shepherd along along here. German Shepherd, I think a Bernies mountain dog down there.

[00:15:05] Lots of huskies. Which

[00:15:08] Madison: we were informed today that Huskies and Corgis are part of the same family. I need to look that up. Yeah.

[00:15:12] Jess: But

[00:15:12] Madison: that sounds right. I mean,

[00:15:14] Jess: what, how does it sound right.

[00:15:16] Madison: They're not like a head. No. A

[00:15:19] Jess: Corgi is a herding breed.

[00:15:20] Madison: Is a husky not,

[00:15:23] Jess: I don't know. I don't know. Like what family is the husky in?

[00:15:26] Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I have to look that up. I don't,

[00:15:30] Madison: I see

[00:15:30] Jess: it. 'cause he, I don't play with him. I don't, I do not like

[00:15:34] Madison: playing on this cliff back here, like in this big sand dune.

[00:15:37] Jess: You mean where it says falling rocks? Stay back. Oh

[00:15:41] Madison: no. Oh no. Jemini. Come here right now. Paula come. They're always just doing their own thing.

[00:15:49] Ziggy's just here

[00:15:49] Jess: with us. Jemini. Come here. Good girl. Okay, we're back. That was a lot of chaotic movement that happens, especially when you're like sitting down at the dog beach. It's not like you come here to like relax. No dogs are gonna come up to you. And that's just what happened, which was fun

[00:16:05] Madison: and great.

[00:16:05] I think it's so funny, every time I come to the beach and I don't bring like a chair and stuff, people are like, you're gonna the beach. I'm like, no, no, nah. This isnt that kind of beach. No.

[00:16:14] Jess: It's not, someone asked if Ziggy was up for adoption. That was interesting. And she said Oliver, she was like, don't, like I won't take your dog.

[00:16:23] And I'm like, okay. Please don't. Yeah, I wonder just 'cause she's like walking around. Apollo was getting strange treats. Yeah. You know, you just gotta keep a dry out The dog beach. I dry out. Yeah. The dog beach keeps you on your toes. Come here Jim. Lay down. Lay down.

[00:16:38] Madison: Good

[00:16:38] Jess: girl. Before we wrap this up. We're gonna kind of go back and forth and answer questions we ask people today.

[00:16:46] Oh, so Madison, what is a core memory that you have with your dogs?

[00:16:53] Madison: Oh, so many. Um, yeah, it's a

[00:16:56] Jess: tough one.

[00:16:58] Madison: A core memory, though. It could be a

[00:16:59] Jess: recent one. It doesn't have to be like the core

[00:17:01] Madison: memory. I feel like just like any time, and this is gonna sound so. Like stupid or cheesy. Even like when I lay down in bed, Apollo curls up in front of me like in a ball, and then Gemini gets behind me and I'm like, I'm just like a little sandwich with my dogs.

[00:17:23] And like, this is, this is the life. This is what I wanted. All my life time. I'm like, I'm squished. My husband's like, literally, this is all you dreamed of and you have two dogs in your bed and so loving on you. And so I can't imagine anything else. And so I know that's not like. Always what people would say, but like every time I sit there, I feel so grateful.

[00:17:46] Jess: Are they gonna have a bath before they squish you in bed tonight? I know I might put them in your bed. No.

[00:17:53] Madison: Oh, Sandy. Yeah, so he is like,

[00:17:55] Jess: um, please. No. Oh, sorry.

[00:17:57] Madison: Z Yeah. There you go. What do you think your dog loves most about you?

[00:18:02] Jess: I do think, like when I take her out on adventures, she is like my little shadow.

[00:18:08] Even though like at home, she's like a cat dog and I don't see her. Yeah. So I do think she loves when I grab the car keys and she's like, oh, we're going somewhere. Or I grab my suitcase. Like she knows. And again, like 98% of the time she's coming on whatever trip it is with me. So I, I have to believe and think that she loves the adventurous adventures we get to go on.

[00:18:31] Madison: Yeah. Even though, but she does, she literally loves her suitcase and she loves. Just being around and coming, like every time we're about to leave the door, like the house, she's always like, I'm coming. I'm standing by the door. Like, wring your butt. She's like a, she's coming with, so she loves being your companion.

[00:18:51] Jess: We're gonna go into Zoomie mode. You have two dogs answer for both of 'em. We're just gonna go back and forth until we just like run out of questions. Peanut butter treat or pup cup. Pup cup for both tennis ball or squeaky toy. Squeaky Toy Beach or Park Beach. Human bed or dog bed? Dog bed. Swimming or running?

[00:19:16] Madison: Ooh, you hit me. Um, both. Yeah. Uh, shoot. Running. I mean, they always love chasing each other. Um, running in the water. Like along the water? Yeah, running along the water. Um. Morning or nighttime. Like she Morning girl or nighttime. Ooh, she's a nighttime

[00:19:39] Jess: girl. Like mornings. She's a lazy dog. Yeah. Bone or like a biscuit bone.

[00:19:48] Unfortunately. That's our episode on dog Parents in the Wild Beach Edition. Hopefully we could do more of these at different locations and interact with dog parents and

[00:20:00] Madison: some future events too. Yes, which we talked

[00:20:02] Jess: about. That would be fun. This was a fun episode. I think the dogs are tired. They're dirty, they're messy.

[00:20:08] Definitely need a bath. Everyone's ready to go. Yeah. Everyone's anxious. They're thirsty. They want to lay down all the things. So are we. We are too.
